Background of the Study
Scalability refers to the ability of a network infrastructure to grow and adapt to increasing demands for resources and services without compromising performance. As Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, continues to expand in terms of student population, faculty, and online learning initiatives, its existing network infrastructure must scale accordingly to support growing demands. However, without proper scalability planning, network performance can suffer, leading to delays, connectivity issues, and decreased user experience (Aliyu & Abubakar, 2024).
This study will evaluate the scalability of the university’s network infrastructure, identifying potential bottlenecks and limitations in the current design. By analyzing factors such as bandwidth capacity, hardware performance, and software flexibility, this research will provide actionable insights for improving the university’s network scalability to accommodate future growth.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, faces challenges in scaling its network infrastructure to meet the increasing demands of students, faculty, and staff. The existing infrastructure may not support the university’s long-term growth, leading to network congestion and performance degradation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the scalability of the current network infrastructure at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi.

  2. To identify potential scalability issues that could hinder the growth of the university’s network.

  3. To propose solutions for improving the scalability of the university’s network infrastructure.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current scalability challenges faced by the university’s network infrastructure?

  2. How does the existing network infrastructure support the growth of the university’s digital services and student population?

  3. What solutions can be implemented to improve the scalability of the university’s network?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on evaluating the network infrastructure within Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, and exclude external networks and third-party infrastructure. Limitations may include potential difficulties in testing scalability under real-world conditions and budget constraints for infrastructure upgrades.

Definitions of Terms

  • Network Scalability: The capacity of a network to grow and manage increased traffic and data flow without compromising performance.

  • Bandwidth: The maximum data transfer rate of a network.

  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Improvements made to network hardware and software to support higher volumes of data traffic.
